RECITAL 101
10 Helpful Hints to a Successful Recital Day!
Recital is just around the corner and the Dance Shoppe of Centreville wants your
dancer's day to be extra special. Recital day is fun and exciting for everyone
involved but can also be a time of nervousness and stress. Our staff has put their
heads together to come-up with some helpful tips in-order to make your dancer's
recital day more memorable and stress free.
Hint 1 – Be On Time:
Being on time is important to keeping your dancers nerves at bay. Make sure to leave enough time to drive to the recital location, get your dancer to the appropriate area and get to your seat.
Hint 2 – Write Names in Everything:
The dressing room can be a very busy place during recital and costume pieces have a way of getting lost very easily. Make sure to place your dancers name on all pieces of their costumes as well as on their tights and shoes. This way, if you loose something, it is easier to locate it.
Hint 3 – Remove Costume Tags:
Some costume manufacturers place tags on the inside
and outside of the costume. Make sure all outside tags are removed before
performance and the inside tags are not visible. You can use the inside
tags to write your dancers name on.
Hint 4 – Bring Extra Accessories:
Pack an extra pair of tights in-case of runs or snags. Bring along extra safety pins and bobby pins. Safety pins can be used to hold costume pieces in place and are an easy repair tool for straps on shoes and costumes. Bobby pins are great for holding stray hairs in place and help hair pieces from falling out. You should always pin hair pieces to the dancer's hair so they don't fall out during performances.
Hint 5 – Check, Check and Re-Check:
Don't wait until the day before recital to make sure
that your dancer has all the pieces to their costume. You should double check that
you have the correct color and style of tights, the correct color and style of shoes,
and all pieces of your dancer's costume. If your costume comes with a lot of small
pieces, pin each individual piece to the costume so they don't get lost in a bag or
mixed up with someone else's costumes.
Hint 6 – When in Doubt, Ask Questions:
Teachers and staff want you to be informed, so if you don't understand something you should ask. Read all the paperwork your studio provides you regarding recital. They spend a lot of time putting the information together and a lot of your questions can be answered just by reading. Recital day is a very busy day for the teachers and staff, so try to ask your questions before recital day if possible.
Hint 7 – Practice the Ballet Bun:
Have you ever made a ballet bun? Don't worry; we have put together a step-by-step guide to help you out. You should practice a couple of times before your dancer's big day.
Hint 8 – Give Positive Words of Encouragement:
Some dancers find performing in front of a crowd scary,
while others truly enjoy the experience. Whether you have a nervous dancer or excited
dancer, remember to give positive words of encouragement to support them.
Hint 9 – Get an Undergarment:
Most studios require dancers to forego the traditional underwear and bras for performance. If your dancer doesn't feel comfortable with this, you can buy a dance undergarment. Check with your dancer's instructor as to what type of undergarment they recommend.
Hint 10 – HAVE FUN!
Find a seat, sit back, relax, and enjoy the wonderful show your child has worked so hard on all year!
